Putnam County was the 28th county in Florida, established in 1849. The county was named for Benjamin Alexander Putnam (1801-1869), Lawyer, soldier, member of the Florida legislature, judge, and the first president of the Florida Historical Society. Putnam County covers an area of 733 square miles, and has a population of just over 70,000 people. Part of the Ocala National Forest occupies Putnam County, but the county is most famous as the "Bass Fishing Capitol of the World." The mighty, north-flowing (!) St. Johns River slices through the county, and is the watery road that led many people to initially settle here.

Interlachen, is a small town in Putnam County, Florida with a population of about 1,500, situated on SR 20 between Gainesville and Palatka in Northeast Florida. The town was incorporated in 1888. Many of the town's 100+ year old homes have been preserved. The word Interlachen means "between the lakes" and yes, there are many lakes in Interlachen which provide recreation and beauty. The city of Interlachen was developed as both a citrus growing center and a winter Florida resort.

Interlachen is located just east of Gainesville, home of the University of Florida. Quality of life is excellent with an expanding regional labor market, great recreational facilities, three near by community colleges, and major hospitals. The area has approximately 400 bodies of water, making it a hub for recreation. The surrounding areas invite you to explore its beautiful rivers and lakes, cool natural springs and unspoiled wilderness parks in this exquisite sub- tropical region. Putnam County is also home to the Ravine Gardens State Park which consists of 85 acres and offers picnicking and nature trails. The park has more than 100,000 azaleas of some 50 varieties that are enhanced by 22,000 other sub-tropical plants and visitors may also drive through the gardens on the 1.8 mile scenic drive.

Two golf courses and a driving range are located in the area. The Palatka Municipal Course, an 18 hole par 70 course and the Live Oak Golf and Country Club, a 18 hole par 70 semi-private course in Welaka are available for the golfer in the family. There is also the Putnam Golf & Recreation Facility which is a driving range with batting cages, game machines, and also offers golf lessons.

Area Festivals and events include a 42 nautical mile "Mug Race". Sailors race from Palatka to Jacksonville on the St. Johns River. The Azalea Festival is held each spring has a beauty contest, parade, jet ski races, golf tournament, and other fun-filled events. The Blue Crab Festival, held Memorial Day Weekend, offers a wide variety of food vendors serving dishes like alligator, soft shell crab, shrimp, steamed blue crab and much more! Entertainment is scheduled for the entire four days of the event which also includes a used Boat Sale and Arts & Crafts show. The Catfish Festival is held in Crescent City each year on the first Saturday in April and offers a championship catfish skinning contest, arts & crafts, a parade led by King Catfish, and southern delicacies like fried fingerling catfish, crab, alligator tail, swamp cabbage, hush puppies and strawberry shortcake are the "bill of fare".

Putnam County provides pleasant year-round living conditions. With summer temperatures averaging 82 degrees F, and winters at a mild 59 degrees F, there is plenty to do in Putnam County whether you like sports, shopping, dining or history.

Attractions within a short drive are St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city, Jacksonville, the states second largest city, Marineland, Daytona International Speedway (NASCAR), world famous Daytona Beach, Jai Alai, Greyhound Track, Silver Springs, Florida State Museum of Natural History, and the Atlantic Coast beaches are only thirty minutes away.

Within a two hour drive one can visit Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, Sea World, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center, Cypress Gardens, Weeki Wachee Springs, Homosassa Springs and historic Cedar Key, a quaint fishing village on the gulf coast.
